Bliss Mansion [Our Event Central]—Bliss
Mansion [Our Event Central]-Our J2009West Event Headquarters is located
at 608 Elizabeth Street, in the heart of Carson City's historic district
and across the street from the Nevada Governor's Mansion. This 3-story,
8,000 square foot Victorian mansion was the largest residence in Nevada
when it was built and occupied in 1879 by the Lake Tahoe lumber,
steamship, and railroad magnate, Duane L. Bliss. Bliss made his fortune
with his vast holdings of land and timber surrounding Lake Tahoe and his
sawmills and his Lake Tahoe/Carson City Railroad that transported
construction lumber from Lake Tahoe to Virginia City's mines. Today, the
mansion occupies a full city block and contains a number of period
furnishings from the late 1800s. The mansion has plenty of parking on
its grounds and surrounding streets and a large covered porch for J2009W
participants and their cars. Bliss Mansion is also within a few blocks
walking distance from downtown Carson City's casinos, restaurants, bars,
and the Nevada State Museum (a former U.S. Mint). More Photos of Event Central |
State Capitol Within Walking Distance |
For many years after its 1870 construction, Nevada's capitol
building stood a lonely vigil in the center of Carson City. Grounds
for the capitol complex had been set aside by town father Abe Curry,
but Nevada started out small, and the need for big government had
not developed.
Now, more than 130 years later, the building is still used, standing as a testament to the foresight of Nevada's founding fathers. Other grand Carson City buildings surround the capitol, marking the incredible growth of Nevada's capital city. But the capitol building, constructed of native sandstone, holds the special designation of second oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi River |
While we suggest you wait until after The Event to lose your shirt or
double your Jensen maintenance fund, there are a number of 24 hour
casinos in Carson City, with the closest casino to Event Headquarters
being the Nugget Casino. The Nugget Casino is located just 6 blocks
east of Bliss Mansion. We will also be holding our Saturday night Awards Banquet in one of the Nugget's banquet rooms. More Info |

Virginia City How to get there |
Virginia City (15 miles northeast)
Virginia City was born in 1859 when Peter O'Reilly and Patrick McLaughlin found gold in Six-Mile Canyon, land also claimed by H.T.P. Comstock. Hundreds of prospectors rushed to the "Comstock Lode" to seek their fortune. James Finney, a miner from Virginia, is said to have called the town "Old Virginny Town." That name became "Virginia City." In its heyday, the 1860s and 70's, 24-hour silver and gold mining works dotted the mountain. The Comstock Lode made so many millionaires, this was called "the richest place on earth." Area wealth helped finance the Civil War and paid to build old San Francisco. Mark Twain also began his writing career here. |
The Virginia City Hill Climb is a challenging, 6-mile stretch of Nevada State highway 341 North from Silver City to Virginia City is the “course” and Hwy 342 in the opposite direction is the return. You may want to have a look at this.

MS Dixie II |
It’s true! This boat has fans. The 570-passenger, award-winning M.S. Dixie II is the largest cruising vessel on
Lake Tahoe, and a local favorite. Considered one of Tahoe’s
most entertaining and affordable water activities, the
M.S. Dixie II has been voted “Best Boat Cruise
at Tahoe” by local residents, and “Best Cruise in
Nevada” by Nevada Magazine. There are several daily two hour M.S. Dixie
cruises which run east/west across the south end of Lake Tahoe, from
Zephyr Cove to Emerald Bay and back. The M.S. Dixie's web site is a
little funky, so we suggest you call them for current pricing and any
advanced reservations, as needed (toll-free phone: 877.896.3830). With
our Jensen Event time frame, reservations should not be needed, but the
occasional wedding party on Saturday or Sunday might get in the way, so
call to be on the safe side. The daily two hour paddlewheeler
tours depart Zephyr Cove at 1130AM and 230PM daily. 22 miles southwest, on the southeastern shore of Lake Tahoe More Info |
